Jousting

Jousting is, of course, the backbone of the IJA.

Joust tournaments can be run by the IJA-Canada itself or by private individuals or groups. The IJA and the IJA-Canada set standards for equipment and the running of tournaments, and offers sanctions and assistance to those who wish to run tournaments following the IJA rules.

The IJA offers certifications for jousters (as well as for foot crew, mounted games and ground combatants). Unfortunately, there are no certified IJA trainers in Canada. Fortunately, there are experienced jousters both inside and outside the IJA-Canada who can assist you in learning to joust. When you feel you have sufficient experience at both mounted games and the joust, the IJA-Canada will endeavour to prepare a certification video to send to the IJA International for assessment. With time, the IJA-Canada will develop the expertise to assess people "in house".

The association rules, equipment specifications, certification requirements and some personal training exercises are set out in the IJA Members Book and the IJA-Canada Members Book, both of which are included with IJA-Canada membership.
